Our Story
I’m Alex, and what started in 2014 with a single coffee van (and a dream) has now become West Berkshire Roastery - complete with two coffee roasters and a Labrador who thinks he’s the CEO.
Along the way, I discovered that coffee is one big, tangled mess - dodgy practices and shady tactics all over the place. But there’s also a whole lot of amazing farmers doing it right. So, I ditched the usual suspects and set off on a quest for the good stuff: direct-traded coffees served with a generous side of transparency.
With a bit of Berkshire flair and caffeine-fuelled creativity, I’m here to bring you one of the finest (and cleanest) coffee experiences you’ll ever sip. La Roma
Nestled deep within the Andes mountains, where golden sunlight filters through the misty forests, lies Emmanuel and Valentina's farm - La Roma.
Emmanuel and Valentina have been working with their own farm – along with around 40 neighbouring farms to create a strategic bridge between the farmers who grow small quantities and external markets who demand larger quantities.
Handpicked by experienced farmers, every coffee cherry is harvested at peak ripeness. On sunlit patios, beans are dried slowly and evenly, their transformation overseen with meticulous care. Each step honours traditions passed down through generations, ensuring the final product captures the essence of the farms terroir.
Once the coffee cherries are picked, pulped and submerged in fresh spring water for the next 24hrs. After fermentation, the mucilage is carefully removed and the coffee is dried in the sun on raised beds for 20-25 days. The blending and drying allow for all the coffee to homogenise resulting in a rich cup with notes of caramel, cookie and nut.

I usually go for the very good Signature Gold but thought I’d add the Dark Gold to the basket as well this time. Definitely darker, I was worried it would be too strong and overpowering. It is strong, punches nicely through the milk to make sure you get the coffee taste, but it’s not overpowering. The rates is really nice , and if you want a stronger flavour than the signature gold (which is amazing btw) then I’d give this one a go. You won’t be disappointed.
Having tried a lot of independent roasters- Black Gold hit the mark for flavour and ethics. Customer service is excellent too! I go for a double shot in a small tea cup with a little frothed oat milk 😊
